Asbury sits directly against Dubuque's west side in Dubuque County, close enough that the two cities' built-up areas run together without much open space between them. It's small in land area — just over 3 square miles — but its population has grown from a few dozen residents in the 1960s to 5,943 at the 2020 census, one of the highest growth rates of any city in Iowa over that stretch.

Asbury's roots go back to Methodist settlers in the 1830s; the community takes its name from Francis Asbury, one of the first two bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States. That changed after Prohibition's repeal gave small unincorporated communities a reason to formally organize — Asbury incorporated in 1933, in part to gain the legal standing needed to sell alcohol within its own limits. It remained modest in size through the 1950s, then began the sustained growth that has defined it since: from 71 residents in 1960 to 410 by 1970, when Asbury grew faster than any other city in Iowa, and on to its current population as one of Dubuque County's larger bedroom communities.
