Dyersville sits along the North Fork of the Maquoketa River in the far western part of Dubuque County, spilling slightly into eastern Delaware County as well. The museum exists here because of the Ertl Company, founded by Fred Ertl Sr. in Dubuque in 1945 and moved to larger facilities in Dyersville in 1959; Ertl produced its first John Deere die-cast toy tractor in 1952 and grew into one of the best-known names in farm-toy manufacturing, which is a large part of why Dyersville still carries the "Farm Toy Capital" title today.
